Therapy is about understanding the self that you are. Part of getting to know yourself is to let go of the limiting stories that you have told yourself about who you are and where you have come from so that you aren’t trapped by them; so that you can live your life and not live it by the story you’ve been telling yourself about your life.
I offer careful and compassionate counseling with the primary focus on understanding my clients and their stories. I want to help my clients to achieve whatever solutions and life changes they are looking for while enjoying the therapeutic process as much as possible and experiencing his/herself in new ways. From my years of experience working with individuals, we all have the ability to make changes in our life. The process of therapy can allow you to grow more quickly than you ever have before. It is important to me to make a difference in the lives of my clients through improving their self-confidence and helping them through life’s problems.
I have worked in a wide array of different settings and now work with individuals from all ages. I have also worked with clients from diverse backgrounds helping them to deal with a variety of situations such as depression, PTSD, anxiety, grief and loss, suicidality, and addiction.
I graduated from California State University in Sacramento with a Bachelor’s in Gerontology and obtained a Double Masters in Social Work with a concentration in Veteran Studies and Mental Health and Masters in Gerontology from the University of Southern California. I am here and ready to help you if you are ready to do the work….you will be how amazed at how capable you are to explore parts of yourself you never knew existed!
I believe as humans we desire to connect and align with our true selves and I am committed to providing a space where folks can be who they are, explore their identity, and work through difficult emotions and life experiences. Life can bring on unexpected challenges and worries that make it difficult for us to be the best versions of ourselves. I believe you are not defined by your past experiences or childhood traumas, but rather how you choose to heal and forge your own path. My goal is to support my clients with achieving their version of happiness through a healing and non judgemental therapeutic space. I have experience working with teens and adults ( ages 13-40) in various therapeutic settings.
I specialize in working with the BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ community in the following areas: Anxiety/ Stress related disorders , Depression/ Mood Disorders , Gender Identity, parental Stress, trauma, Anger Management, Interpersonal relationships, Stress management, self-esteem, and school issues.
Using a strength based and client centered approach I will help guide and coach you through ways to cope and work through various transitions, life changes, and any other stressors that come your way. I work with my clients to create a therapeutic space that feels client centered while pulling from therapeutic modalities such as narrative therapy, mindfulness, DBT, CBT, and solution focused.
A little about me. I am originally from the Bay Area. I originally went to Laney College before transferring to Utah Tech University on a basketball scholarship and obtained my B.A in Psychology. I found my joy in the field of psychology when working as a counselor at a non public middle/ high school for emotionally disturbed children. I moved on to obtain my M.A in Counseling Psychology from Holy Names University in Oakland CA. I have gained working experience with teens and adults in various settings such as, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, school based, and private practice. I identify as a queer woman of color. I am a new parent and enjoying all that comes with that role. My favorite things to do in my spare time are go on walks, binge watch a good netflix documentary, listen to true crime podcasts, and spend time with my family.
Greetings, I’m Lashara!
You….are….safe….here! I understand that just the mere contemplation of engaging a formal therapeutic process can sometimes be intimidating, dare I say scary, but let me assure you, you are not the first (nor the last) to have those types of feelings. And let me reiterate that you….are….safe….here! Whether it’s your first time in a structured therapeutic environment or a subsequent experience, my objective is to make you feel like you are entering a safe AND protected space where you can authentically be you! A safe and mutually-respectful space undergirded in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, etc. A protected atmosphere where you can engage in the process of introspectively examining those internal and external factors that influence the dynamics of your world--and how to make choices and changes that produce wellness of spirit, soul, and body for yourself and within the relationships you attend to!
I partner with clients from a holistic perspective, examining how the intersection of their biological, psychosocial, and spiritual attributes influence their world. This includes a supported deep dive into the thought processes and environmental factors that influences certain choices, relationship dynamics, and experiences. I utilize a holistic integrative approach, including employing tools from certain practices such as: motivational interviewing; strength-based; mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral; task-centered; and solution-focused modalities to create a collaborative, client-centered atmosphere to define overarching goals and objectives (specific, measurable actions) to reach those expressed goals.
There are many personal and professional experiences that continue to influence my passion for supporting individuals, families, groups and communities towards improving their individual and collective well-being. With over 20 years of experience within the non-profit arena, I have committed much of my professional and personal time to supporting efforts that promote equality, equity, and enhanced awareness at producing equitable outcomes for community systems of care. I have a myriad of experience working across multiple age groups--particularly with young adults, in general, and adults of all ages within the Service member, Veteran, and Family (SMVF) community. I also have experience working within a faith-based counseling perspective.
I genuinely invite you to get to know a little bit more about me—professionally and personally. I earned both my Bachelor’s Degree (Social Science) and my Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from Brandman University. For the last nine years I have worked directly within the military community providing a myriad of services. Within my current role with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, a majority of my work is spent providing crisis-level mental health support for individuals (and resources for concerned 3rd Parties) who are at varying levels of emotional distress--due to mental, behavioral, and/or physical health challenges. Additionally, I have spent significant time advising, advocating, and providing consultation to senior military personnel and policymakers in implementing statewide and national programs aimed at improving mental health and wellness resilience resources for Guard/Reserve Service members and their families. Outside of my professional roles, I have a special understanding when it comes to the particulars of military culture—both the challenges and the rewards-- given that I was raised within an immediate family of esteemed military Service members and I am currently a military spouse to an active-duty U.S. Navy Chief with whom I share two wonderful children. When I am not working with clients, I love to engage faith-based activities, reading, laughing, listening to music, working out, and spending time with family and friends.
My overarching goal is to partner in supporting individuals, couples, families, and communities through a journey--within a therapeutic relationship--that continuously stimulates deep reflections and discoveries that ultimately produces “transform-actional”, fulfilling, and sustainable changes.
I would love to partner and take that journey with you!
